Join us on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 pm to celebrate Shavuot
and honor our 5786 Confirmation Class!
The festival of Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.
Shavuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks,” and the holiday occurs seven weeks after Passover. In ancient times, Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah, education, and the choice to participate actively in Jewish life. In The Songs of Songs, Chapter 4, verse 11, Torah is likened to milk and honey. As a result of this lovely comparison, it is typical on Shavuot to eat blintzes and cheesecake. Confirmation is a Reform-originated ceremony for teens that is tied to the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. It marks both an individual teenager’s and a group affirmation of commitment to the Judaism. One of the “youngest” Jewish lifecycle ceremonies, confirmation began less than 200 years ago.
